An Exclusive Interface With Mr. Thomas Gebler Director Sales for Mayr India

IU: Please brief us About Mayr Global Network & Infrastructure?

Mayr power transmission is a family-run company with more than 125 years of history. We are a leading manufacturer of safety brakes, torque limiters and shaft couplings. The company is active in over 60 industries worldwide. Currently, approximately 750 employees work at the headquarters in Mauerstetten, in the Allgäu region. Worldwide, Mayr power transmission has more than 1,350 employees. In addition to the production subsidiary in India we run two production plants outside of Germany in Poland and China. With subsidiaries in the USA, in France, Great Britain, Italy, Singapore, Japan, Spain and in Switzerland as well as around 40 additional country representatives, Mayr power transmission has a global presence.

IU: Could you tell us about your current role at Mayr and your key responsibilities within the organization?

As the Director of Sales at Mayr India, I am responsible for establishing and leading the Indian sales team, ensuring both its growth and expertise. With over 30 years of experience as an export manager at Chr. Mayr GmbH, I have traveled extensively across the Indian subcontinent, gaining valuable insights into its culture and market dynamics.

IU: How does Mayr envision its growth in India and its contribution to the country’s industrial automation and manufacturing sectors?

As a family-run company, we are focussing on sustainable growth. Our subsidiary is set to grow to 20 employees over the next 3 years. Their development is especially important to us, as highly motivated and well-trained employees belong to our key success factors. We see ourselves as a reliable partner for up-and-coming high-tech industries such as those you mentioned. Our innovative products add safety and reliability to systems and machinery, which is exactly what is needed in these sectors.

IU: What market opportunities do you see for your industrial automation products in India, and how do you plan to position them?

The Indian market is extremely interesting due to the wide range of possible applications. For example, applications in the fields of robotics and medical technology are on the rise. We have extensive experience in all these areas and can offer real added value with our products. In the current phase, however, the focus is still on our elevator brakes. India is clearly growing in height, so elevators are needed, and we are a leader in this area.
For example, you can see our brakes as soon as you arrive at Bangalore airport and have a look into one of the glass elevators.

IU: Could you provide insights into your manufacturing capabilities and R&D initiatives in India?

With the establishment of Power Transmissions India Pvt. Ltd., we are focussing on two strategic goals. On the one hand, we are investing specifically in strengthening our sales network and optimising cost-efficient logistics for merchandise from our main plants. On the other hand, we are focussing on establishing a local supply chain and a production facility for safety brakes – in line with the ‘local-for-local’ approach.

The initial setup is designed for a capacity of 2,000 units per month. Research and development initiatives for the brakes manufactured there are geared towards meeting the economic requirements of the Indian market without compromising on the customary Mayr quality.

IU: Can you share any new or upcoming product innovations that you’re particularly excited about?

Our new line of shaft couplings, the ROBA® DS Aluminium, is definitely an exciting product that we are currently launching on the market. The aluminium version has almost the same properties as the steel version of our ROBA® DS but weighs significantly less. This results in a noticeably lower mass moment of inertia. When used in test benches, for example, this brings in major advantages. One area of application for such test benches with ROBA® DS Aluminium couplings is the development and construction of electric drives, an industry with a great future in India, too.

IU: Could you brief us on Mayr’s quality policy and how it is implemented across your operations?

With our strategy and our different plants, we are well positioned and can master complexity and different technology levels. With the same test benches in all plants, we guarantee high quality standards locally. Many locations, one quality is our guiding principle. Every product that leaves one of our plants is therefore tested to the same standards worldwide and the results are documented. This comprehensive control is the core of our quality promise.

IU: What is your future vision and growth strategy for Mayr on a global scale?

Safety, reliability, and innovation are our core values. On this basis, we are the reliable partner of our customers. I am convinced that these values will remain relevant in the future. We safeguard the movements of this world, that is what drives and motivates us.

As I said before, we value sustainable growth that we can also organise in a stable manner. In view of the global situation, our Indian subsidiary gives us more room for manoeuvre and is definitely a milestone in our international development.
